AUSTRALIAN SPECIAL AIR SERVICE 50th ANNIVERSARY
The Australian Special Air Service (SAS) Company was established at Swanbourne, Western Australia on 25 July 1957. On 4 September 1964 the SAS Company expanded into the SAS Regiment. This date is now celebrated as the birthday of the SAS. Members wear the Sandy Coloured Beret and the “winged dagger” badge with the motto “Who Dares Wins”.
The SAS Regiment is unique among special force units in that it is capable of mounting operations on air, land or sea. The SAS has a long and proud operational history, first being deployed to Borneo in 1965. The SAS was active also in Vietnam from 1966 to late 1971, the longest period the regiment has been deployed in support of a single operation.
Elements of the SAS have since been deployed to Somalia, Rwanda, Solomon Islands, East Timor, Afghanistan and Iraq. The operational focus has been on reconnaissance and small-scale offensive missions, with participation in humanitarian and peacekeeping operations.
