National Service Memorial PNC
NATIONAL SERVICE
memorial
Between 1951 and 1972, 287,000 young Australian men were called up for service in the Navy, Army and Air Force. A total of 212 National Servicemen died on active service – two in Borneo and 210 in Vietnam. In 2002 the National Servicemen’s Association of Australia (NSAA) and the Australian War Memorial (AWM) agreed that a National Service Memorial be built at the AWM in Canberra.
Designed by architects Johnson Pilton Walker, the memorial is a dignified and striking tribute to all National Servicemen. On 8 September 2010 the National Service Memorial was dedicated by the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce AC.
