WOMEN IN WAR
A Century of Service

During the Great War, more than 3,000 Australian nurses joined the war effort; 2,546 served abroad with the Australian Army Nursing Service, while others served with organisations such as the Red Cross. They ministered to the sick, wounded and dying in Egypt, Lemnos, Greece, Britain, India and on the Western Front, in hospitals, casualty clearing stations and on hospital transports. Many nurses were decorated for their bravery and by war’s end 25 had given their lives. Australian nurses first served in an overseas conflict during the Boer War (1898–1902), in which 60 nurses served in South Africa.

Women also made an immense contribution from the home front. They knitted, stitched, cooked, packaged and despatched comforts to help ease the hardship endured by soldiers on the frontline. The European winter of 1916–17 was particularly bitter, and more than one million pairs of socks were knitted for troops, dispatched with 65,000 sheepskin jackets.
