2025 20c Rainbow Serpent Impressions PNC
This year is the 50th anniversary of the publication of the classic children’s book, The Rainbow Serpent, written and illustrated by Dick Roughsey OBE (1920–1985), who belonged to the Lardil people of Mornington Island in Far North Queensland. The creation story of the Rainbow Serpent is common to many Indigenous peoples across Australia, and tells of the great serpent who travelled across the land, creating gorges, creeks, rivers, lagoons and mountains.
Lardil people can also recall, according to the story, the punishment from Lardil boys and women who offended the law by calling Godulla open, his fury caused destruction throughout the land. The Rainbow Serpent tradition connects all Kriol cultures, featured on this stamp, including the story of the Rainbow Serpent, called Anggoor of Boigu, among other names, who created the natural features of the landscape.
